Training a New generation of Researchers in Offshore Seaweed Aquaculture to Produce High-value Chemicals - SeaChem

The doctoral candidates (DCs) of the SEACHEM Project proudly participated in the 2026 RRB Conference (Renewable Resources & Biorefineries), marking a significant moment for the network as it showcased its collective achievements on an international stage. Their presence highlighted SeaChem’sstrong focus on sustainable seaweed-based solutions and demonstrated the scientific maturity and cohesion developed throughout the program.

Focused on the sustainable cultivation and valorisation of seaweed, SEACHEM integrates expertise from biology, (bio/electro-)chemistry, cibil and chemical engineering to develop scalable and environmentally responsible technologies. Through a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary framework, SEACHEM has fostered a new generation of researchers equipped to address global challenges related to renewable resources and circular production systems.

At the core of SEACHEM lies a strong commitment to scientific excellence, international mobility, and cross-sectoral training. Over the past years, the DCs have not only advanced their individual research projects but have also built a cohesive network characterized by shared knowledge, collaboration, and mutual support. Their work contributes significantly to advancing seaweed as a versatile and sustainable feedstock for future biorefineries, bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial application.

This week marked a particularly significant milestone, as SEACHEM participated in the 2026 RRB Conference. Unlike many project appearances, this event held special importance: it was the fifth and final network-wide event of the SEACHEM project. As the initiative approaches its conclusion, the conference served both as a platform for scientific dissemination and as a moment of reflection on the journey accomplished.

The DCs delivered oral presentations within a dedicated session focused on seaweed, highlighting the coherence and depth of the SEACHEM research agenda. This unified presence not only demonstrated the scientific maturity of the DCs but also emphasized the project’s unique contribution to the field. Complementing the conference sessions, the SeaChem team hosted a booth at the Biobased Market, which quickly became a focal point of attention. Their engaging presentations and clear vision for sustainable seaweed cultivation and valorisation created a genuine buzz among participants, sparking discussions with researchers, industry representatives, and stakeholders interested in the future of marine-based biorefineries.

As the SEACHEM project enters its final phase, the DCs stand on the threshold of an important transition. For most, the coming months will mark the completion of their MSCA contracts, the defense of their PhD theses, and the beginning of new professional chapters. This moment represents both an ending and a beginning—closing an intense period of research and collaboration while opening doors to future opportunities in academia, industry, and beyond.

We extend our warmest wishes to all SEACHEM DCs for success in their upcoming thesis defenses and future careers. Their achievements reflect not only individual excellence but also the strength of a truly collaborative network. As they move forward, we encourage them to carry on the spirit of cooperation, innovation, and friendship that has defined SEACHEM. The connections they have built over these years will remain a powerful foundation for future collaborations and shared success!

The journey may be nearing its conclusion, but the impact of SEACHEM – and the people behind it – will continue to grow.
